What impact will 5G technology will have?
- Increase in bandwidth = more speed and more users
- Can serve more devices in a dense area with higher rates of data transfer
- But... signal is more easily disrupted
- May not reach rural areas and buildings will block signal
- Simpliar for small devices to connect
What are the implications of ignoring 5G
- Create vacuum for conspiracy theories to flourish
- Don't know what the applications look like - infrastructure created without a purpose
- No one (not even the creators) are sure of application and use case
- Technology that is looking for a problem
- Lack of visionary companies connecting decision makers to implementation
- No community looking at the advantages that can be developed
- Hiding location and control of data become problematic
What do we need to think about?
- 5G needs strategic intent e.g. decentralisation and localised energy generation
- Legacy technology is outdated and close to the end of life
- Capability versus legislation - regulations haven't caught up with 4G which has been around for 10 years
- The "edges" of the network will matter more
- Lack of leadership in entrepreneurialism
